The Acting Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Salesi Temo, has critically labeled the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Christopher Pryde, as committing “theft” in relation to his monthly superannuation payment of US$1000. This remark was made during the third day of the tribunal hearing at the Veiuto Court Complex.

The tribunal is currently investigating two main allegations against Pryde: a photo taken with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at a diplomatic event on February 28, 2023, and the unauthorized superannuation payments amounting to US$1000 per month, which have reportedly accumulated to over FJ$288,000 since 2012.

Justice Temo countered media portrayals of the payments as mere over-compensation, clarifying that they should instead be seen as theft due to the absence of any documented authorization. He explained that all such payments would typically require prior consultation with the Attorney-General’s office and the President’s approval, which did not occur in this case. The payments were halted in July 2023 when investigations into the matter began. Justice Temo further asserted that Pryde’s defense based on his contract was inadequate to explain or legitimize these transactions.

He also commented on the photo with Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting it was imprudent for Pryde to associate with a figure mired in political controversy, asserting that visual imagery often speaks volumes, even without context. Justice Temo emphasized the importance of maintaining ethical neutrality for all individuals in judicial positions, both in their professional and personal lives.

In response to Pryde’s claims of financial hardship due to his salary suspension, Justice Temo dismissed these concerns, pointing out that the Constitution allows for legal aid or self-representation as viable alternatives.

The tribunal is set to continue its proceedings today, further delving into these significant allegations.

This case underscores the importance of ethical standards and accountability within judicial roles. As the tribunal progresses, it may serve as a reminder of the need for transparency and adherence to regulations in governmental processes. It is hoped that the outcome will lead to clarity and reinforce the integrity of the legal system for all involved.
