The Ministry of Justice has highlighted the essential function of Justices of the Peace (JPs) as neutral witnesses in various legal proceedings, focusing on their duties in identity verification, document signing, and fraud prevention. Recently, an induction ceremony celebrated the appointment of 60 new JPs, officiated by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Selina Kuruleca.

During the ceremony, Kuruleca elaborated on the diverse responsibilities that come with the role of a JP, including witnessing statutory declarations and certifying copies of documents. She emphasized that their services must be provided without charge to ensure that these important legal functions remain accessible to all members of the community.

Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary urged the newly appointed JPs to carry out their duties with unwavering professionalism and dignity. This call aligns with ongoing efforts within the judiciary to reinforce accountability and maintain the integrity of legal services.

The newly appointed JPs step into a critical role that upholds justice and inspires public trust, echoing sentiments expressed by judicial leaders such as Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, who has previously emphasized the need for ethical standards within the legal profession. Just as Temo has encouraged newly admitted lawyers to embody integrity and professionalism, the JPs are also called to serve with impartiality, reflecting the values that are essential for maintaining an equitable justice system.

As these JPs begin their service, they bring hope for a more accessible and trustworthy legal process, helping to ensure that justice is within reach for every member of the community. Their role is imperative in promoting transparency and fairness, foundational elements for a robust democracy.
