Jeremiah Raibevu College Principal Merewalesi Tuloma emphasized the significant role sports play in keeping students engaged, particularly during the festive season. This year, the school expanded its sporting offerings by introducing badminton, which has already yielded positive outcomes, including a podium finish for one of its students.

Tuloma highlighted the importance of exposing young people to a diverse range of sports as a means to keep them active, focused, and motivated beyond academic settings. She is urging parents and guardians to broaden their support beyond traditional sports like rugby and athletics, encouraging them to embrace new opportunities when they arise.

“We often see schools focusing solely on athletics and rugby. However, there are talents in other sports waiting to be discovered. It is vital for students to experience badminton and other sports to stay engaged, reducing the likelihood of misbehavior or drug use. During the holidays, students can channel their energies into sports, finding satisfaction in victory earned through commitment and dedication,” Tuloma stated.

She believes initiatives like this can play a crucial role in addressing social issues within the community. Notably, Badminton Fiji is currently on a break but is set to resume its activities next month, potentially providing further opportunities for student involvement in this promising sport. This approach not only enriches the students’ lives but also fosters a healthier and more connected community.
