The Japanese government has made a significant contribution to Fiji’s healthcare system by providing six ambulances, a CT scanner, and various medical supplies to the Ministry of Health. This support, valued at approximately $10 million, is part of Japan’s broader Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP) and aims to enhance Fiji’s health services amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, emphasized the importance of ensuring that quality medical equipment is accessible to the public. Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health, noted that the distribution of the ambulances and mobility aids will be prioritized based on the needs of specific medical facilities.

This donation not only showcases the strong partnership between Japan and Fiji but also highlights the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare accessibility across the country. In previous developments, the installation of a new CT scan at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) was also made possible through a COVID-19 related grant from Japan, further illustrating the positive impact of international collaboration on Fiji’s healthcare landscape.

As Fiji continues to navigate the complexities of health service delivery, these contributions foster hope for improved healthcare access and outcomes for the population. The government’s commitment to modernizing medical facilities reflects a unified effort towards building a resilient healthcare system, benefiting the Fijian people now and in the future.
