Japan has made a significant contribution to flood mitigation and climate resilience in Fiji by supplying a new dredger to the Ministry of Waterways. This dredger will be based in Luvuluvu, Nausori, and is part of Japan’s Grant Aid for Economic and Social Development initiative.

Deputy Head of Mission Isami Takada emphasized the importance of this contribution, stating that it builds upon a previous commitment made in 2020 when Japan pledged $12.1 million towards disaster risk reduction equipment. This earlier commitment included vital tsunami early warning systems for the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

The introduction of the dredger is expected to greatly enhance flood management by improving the clearing of river mouths and drainage systems. This will help protect agricultural lands from siltation and ensure safer navigation along waterways.

Minister for Waterways Tomasi Tunabuna underscored the significance of this new equipment, pointing out that between 2020 and 2025, Fiji has also benefitted from the provision of excavators and trucks under Japan’s Grassroots Human Security Projects. He emphasized that such tools are essential for safeguarding infrastructure and supporting food security amid the challenges posed by frequent flooding in the region.

Overall, this initiative highlights the ongoing collaboration between Japan and Fiji in addressing climate-related challenges and enhancing community resilience against disasters.
