Isabella Koi, a promising young rugby player from the Solomon Islands, is making her mark in the world of Fijian rugby at just 21 years old. With roots linked to Namuka-i-Lau, she has recently joined the Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua Women’s development squad, showcasing her commitment to advancing her skills in the sport.

Koi’s rugby journey began in 2019 at Seremaia Bai’s Rugby Academy Fiji, where she grasped the fundamentals of the game. Following her foundational training, she progressed to the Striders Women’s team before signing with Suva Rugby Union, which significantly contributed to her growth as a player. Over the past two years, Koi honed her abilities on a larger stage while representing the Army Women’s XV in the esteemed Sukuna Bowl and was also part of the Fiji U18 girls’ team in 2019, which provided her with the opportunity to tour New Zealand. Additionally, she has consistently been a member of the Fijiana 7s development squad, further solidifying her dedication to the sport.

This year marked a pivotal moment in Koi’s career as she was selected for the Drua Women’s development squad. She expressed her initial disbelief, stating, “When I first got the news, I couldn’t believe I had made it.” Despite her nervousness attending training sessions, she has transformed that apprehension into excitement as she engages deeply in the developmental process.

Playing the hooker position, Koi is not only focused on the technical aspects, like leading the scrum and securing lineouts, but she also recognizes the importance of mental resilience in achieving success at high levels of competition. She describes her inaugural season with the Drua development squad as eye-opening, signaling a bright future ahead.

Isabella Koi’s journey is a testament to hard work and determination in sports, highlighting how emerging talent can break through challenges to reach new heights. Her story serves to inspire young athletes, especially female players, to pursue their passion in rugby, fostering hope for a vibrant future in the sport.
