The United States has proposed a set of security guarantees for Ukraine that would last for 15 years, as stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following discussions about a revised peace plan with former President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday. Trump indicated that an agreement on this aspect of the plan was nearly finalized, reportedly “close to 95%.” However, Zelensky expressed a desire for security assurances that could extend up to 50 years.

During the talks, President Zelensky highlighted ongoing territorial disputes as significant hurdles, particularly regarding the status of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility. He noted that these concerns remain among the last points requiring resolution, while little information was shared about the future of the contested Donbas region.

The response from Russia has been mixed. While Russian officials have dismissed key elements of the proposal in the past, a Kremlin spokesperson acknowledged on Monday that Trump’s viewpoint about the potential for peace being nearer aligns with their perspective, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

This dialogue reflects a growing complexity in the geopolitical landscape, where the potential for peace may be inching closer, albeit amidst significant challenges. As discussions continue, both Ukraine and the United States appear committed to seeking a viable solution that addresses the pressing issues at hand.
