The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) unit, part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is currently looking into a tragic drowning incident involving a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka.
On November 4, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM, a 50-year-old Japanese tourist was found to have drowned while swimming alone near the resort. Minister Agni Deo Singh confirmed the preliminary findings and stated that NOHSS is undertaking further investigations. Their goal is to assess whether the hotel had the adequate systems and procedures to ensure the safety of its guests during swimming and other activities.
The inquiry will include a thorough review of the supervision provided during such events, as well as the effectiveness of rescue and evacuation protocols established for both guests and staff in emergency situations. Singh emphasized the importance of hotel management in identifying potential hazards and implementing suitable control strategies to avert similar incidents in the future.
To assist with these investigations, the National OHS Service is collaborating with the relevant authorities to procure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force.
Moreover, the NOHSS is dedicated to regular inspections of workplaces across Fiji, including resorts, to guarantee compliance with minimum safety standards mandated by law. They also take action against any non-compliance noted during inspections, ensuring that safety measures are prioritized by employers.
This incident highlights the critical importance of safety protocols in hospitality settings, striving to ensure that tourists can enjoy their vacations with peace of mind. By taking concrete steps towards enhancing safety measures, the hope remains that such accidents can be prevented in the future, fostering a safer environment for both visitors and local communities.
