The Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has tasked an investigator with uncovering the cause of an aircraft incident that occurred at a runway in northern Yasawa last Saturday. According to a statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the aircraft involved—a GA8 Airvan—overran the Yasawa Aerodrome runway, coming to a stop just outside of the strip. Fortunately, both the pilot and all six passengers aboard were unharmed, with no injuries reported.
The Ministry also stated that the Yasawa Aerodrome runway is still operational, and aviation activities are continuing as usual. Minister Gavoka’s appointment of an investigator aims to ensure a comprehensive inquiry is conducted, adhering to established protocols and international safety standards.
The outcome of this investigation will help establish the necessary precautions and improvements to enhance aviation safety in the region. The ministry emphasized that the safety and well-being of all passengers, crew members, and stakeholders in Fiji’s aviation sector are of utmost importance. They expressed appreciation for the prompt response from relevant authorities and personnel.
This incident, while concerning, serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of the aviation community in maintaining safety protocols and responding effectively to unforeseen events. By conducting thorough investigations and implementing learned safety measures, the sector can continue to prioritize passenger safety and enhance the overall travel experience in Fiji.
