The investigation led by the Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Edwin Wainiqolo, is expected to conclude this week. Wainiqolo stated in a recent interview that only one individual remains to be questioned—former promoter of South Pacific Boxing Promotion, Fredy Chand.

Wainiqolo confirmed that Mohammed Shameem has already been interviewed and expressed gratitude toward Chand for voluntarily coming forward to assist in the investigation. The inquiry is focused on the boxing incident that tragically resulted in the death of Ubayd Haider.

Initially, the team had planned to interview Chand this week; however, due to the time difference, this couldn’t take place as Chand is currently residing overseas. Wainiqolo assured that the findings of the investigation will be directly reported to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. Should any clarifications be necessary, a press conference will be held to address the findings and related issues.

This investigation is a significant step towards accountability and transparency in the sporting community, and the willingness of individuals to come forward may contribute to a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident. It is hopeful that the findings will lead to improvements in safety regulations and protocols in boxing and other sporting events, ensuring that tragedies like this can be prevented in the future.
