During the celebrations for International Customs Day, several customs officers were honored for their exemplary service and professionalism in customs and border protection. This recognition highlighted the dedication of these officers who have consistently gone above and beyond their duties in managing an increasingly complex border environment.

The awards served as a reminder that the success of customs administration largely depends on the commitment and integrity of its personnel. Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) Board Chairman Malakai Naiyaga emphasized the significance of collaboration among various stakeholders in enhancing the effectiveness of customs operations. “Customs does not operate in isolation,” he remarked, stressing that effective border management relies on partnerships with government agencies, regional partners, and the international community.

Moreover, Naiyaga pointed out that strong customs administration is crucial for fostering economic resilience. Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development Esrom Emmanuel underscored the critical role customs officers play in safeguarding government revenue and ensuring secure borders, which are fundamental for national development. “Customs protects government revenue and supports compliance, all of which are essential for national development,” he noted, adding that a secure border is vital for inspiring investor confidence and facilitating economic growth. Emmanuel reaffirmed the government’s ongoing support for customs and border agencies as pivotal contributors to national security and economic stability.

FRCS Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh remarked that the recognition comes at a pivotal time when customs operations around the globe are undergoing significant transformation. “We celebrate not only the people behind customs but also the transformation of how customs operate in an increasingly complex global environment,” he stated, highlighting the global shift towards paperless systems, single-window processes, and intelligence-led strategies.

International Customs Day is an annual observance that acknowledges the contributions of customs officers worldwide while spotlighting the evolving responsibilities of customs administrations in both securing borders and facilitating trade. The celebration reflects a shared commitment to enhancing customs operations and achieving greater economic and security outcomes for all.
