The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has reported that vehicle insurance claims and life insurance policies, especially regarding surrender values, were the predominant sources of consumer complaints from 2019 to 2024. According to Senior Legal Officer Krishna Keshwan, the commission received a total of 60 complaints, comprising 25 informal and 35 formal cases primarily related to issues such as unregistered insurance payments and unpaid claims.

Keshwan stated that while no formal complaints were filed directly against insurance agents, the FCCC remains proactive in enhancing consumer awareness through ongoing programs. The Commission is also prepared to assist in reviewing the Insurance Act as part of its commitment to improving consumer protection within the insurance framework.

This aligns with broader concerns highlighted by the Consumer Council of Fiji, which reported that from 2019 to 2024, around $1.7 million worth of insurance complaints were raised, pointing towards systemic issues in the industry. Vehicle insurance continues to dominate these complaints, often revolving around delays in claim processing and disputes over payout amounts.

The joint efforts by the FCCC and the Consumer Council suggest a collective commitment towards reforming the insurance industry in Fiji. With advocacy for improved regulations and increased consumer education, there is a hopeful outlook that these initiatives may lead to more efficient services and enhanced consumer protection in the future.

Not only does this reflect ongoing challenges within the insurance sector, but it also presents an opportunity for meaningful reforms that can cultivate consumer trust and foster a fairer marketplace. As both organizations work towards raising awareness and accountability within the industry, consumers may experience a significant shift towards better service standards in the coming years.
