At the age of 42, Vani Sokomuri has made history as the first person in her family to earn a tertiary education qualification. She was one of 28 graduates from the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, where she received a National Certificate in Aged Care and Community Care Level Three.

During the graduation ceremony at the Civic Centre in Labasa, the expectant mother of her seventh child shared her remarkable story of dedication and perseverance. She reflected on her six-month journey, characterized by late-night study sessions after tucking her children into bed. “After putting all my children to sleep, I would study until 1 a.m.,” Vani recounted. Occasionally, she would sleep with her kids and rise at 2 a.m. to resume her studies before preparing breakfast and getting them ready for school.

Vani’s weekdays were filled with activity and time management. “Monday to Friday felt like rush hour,” she explained. After ensuring her children were settled for school and arranging childcare for her youngest, she made it a point to attend class by 8 a.m.

Hailing from Baravi Village, Navakasiga, Bua, and being the eldest of six siblings, Vani’s hard work paid off as she was honored with the Best Clinical Student Female award. Although she completed Year 13 at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College and embarked on a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of the South Pacific, financial barriers forced her to halt her studies and focus on her family after marriage.

“I always wanted to study,” Vani expressed her long-held aspiration. “Like others, I dreamed of attaining tertiary education and setting a positive example for my children to show them that dreams should never be abandoned.” She credited her husband, Napolioni Latianara, an officer with the Labasa Corrections Service, for his unwavering support throughout her academic endeavors.

Vani’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and the importance of pursuing one’s goals, no matter the obstacles. Her story serves as an inspiration for others, highlighting that it is never too late to pursue education and achieve one’s dreams, ultimately motivating future generations to strive for similar accomplishments.

This uplifting narrative emphasizes the significance of education and the positive impact it can have on families and communities. Vani’s commitment to her studies amidst the challenges of motherhood showcases resilience and the drive to inspire others in her family and beyond.
