In an exclusive column titled “Glimpse of PM’s Role,” Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka shares his perspectives on leadership and the challenges faced by Fiji. Through a dialogue with deputy chief of staff Cheerieann Wilson, he addresses concerns raised by the citizens in The Fiji Times’ “Your Fiji, Your Voice” initiative.

Rabuka admits that despite feeling he has done his best, he often contemplates whether he is meeting the needs of the people. Furthermore, he acknowledges the pressure that comes with leading a coalition government, expressing his intention to prioritize the interests of the citizens above party politics. The PM emphasizes the importance of accountability among those in public office, addressing the culture of entitlement as a universal human inclination. He reassures that maintaining institutional integrity is paramount, and emphasizes adherence to laws and the constitution.

Rabuka discusses the dynamics of his quadruple coalition, highlighting the maturity of his fellow members and their commitment to the welfare of the Fijian people. He addresses the increased public scrutiny as the nation approaches elections, suggesting that it is a sign of a healthy democracy where citizens are actively engaged in choosing their leaders.

In response to criticisms about certain figures in politics, he states that it is ultimately the people’s choice whom they consider role models. Rabuka believes that as Fiji progresses, issues concerning moral and ethical standards will be determined by the values upheld by the citizens.

Looking to the future, Rabuka shares his commitment to three primary objectives: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a constitutional review, and fostering regional peace. He expresses a willingness to run in the upcoming elections, contingent upon his health and readiness.

Concerning the rise in drug-related crime, he argues against an armed police force unless directly necessary and explains the importance of enhancing surveillance at Fiji’s borders and ports. He emphasizes proactive measures to tackle drug trafficking while maintaining a balance that does not compromise public safety or freedoms.

This in-depth interview sheds light on PM Rabuka’s leadership philosophy, the challenges of coalition governance, and his vision for Fiji’s future, reinforcing hope for continued growth and accountability in governance. It illustrates an understanding that progress requires collective effort from both leaders and citizens aiming for the nation’s best interests.
