Pakistan is “ready but not desperate” for dialogue with India, according to Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. His comments come in light of ongoing tensions between the two nations, which recently culminated in intense military confrontations. Last month, both countries engaged in severe hostilities that involved fighter jets, missiles, and artillery, the worst fighting seen in decades, prompting a ceasefire on May 10, brokered by the U.S., which India has denied involved third-party mediation.

The recent flare-up in violence was ignited by a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir on April 22 that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists. India accused “terrorists” backed by Pakistan for the attack, a claim vehemently denied by Islamabad. Dar emphasized the need for a comprehensive dialogue between the nations, including issues beyond terrorism, such as water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.

India’s position has been more focused, wanting discussions tied to terrorism exclusively, leading to tensions over water rights crucial for Pakistan’s agriculture, given that the treaty guarantees water supply for 80% of Pakistan’s farms from rivers flowing from India.

Previous reports highlight the international community’s concerns regarding the rising animosities. Several countries have called for restraint and diplomacy in the face of hostilities, supporting both Pakistan’s calls for dialogue on multiple issues and India’s focus on terrorism discussions.

In the backdrop of these events, it is essential for both nations to step back from military posturing and engage in constructive conversations. Despite the significant tensions, there is a glimmer of hope for diplomatic engagement and a peaceful resolution to lingering disputes in the region.

With the situation being precarious, sustained diplomatic efforts could lead to a more stable and peaceful coexistence, benefiting the populations of both India and Pakistan and potentially enhancing regional stability.
