India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, recently emphasized India’s enduring commitment to Fiji and the broader Pacific region, as he marked a new phase of cooperation grounded in trust and shared values. During India’s Republic Day Reception at the Novotel Lami, Mr. Mehta expressed a vision for a collaborative future that would provide tangible benefits for the citizens of both nations.

He acknowledged the strong historical ties between India and Fiji, particularly citing the contributions of the Girmitiya community to Fiji’s cultural, social, and economic fabric. “The Indian diaspora in Fiji has been a cornerstone of our relationship since the 19th century, continuing to play an integral role across various sectors including agriculture, trade, education, and public service,” he stated.

Mr. Mehta highlighted 2025 as a pivotal year for bilateral relations, referencing key visits between officials that have strengthened diplomatic ties. Notable was the visit of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to India and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s significant visit to India in August 2025, which resulted in agreements reaffirming friendship based on mutual respect, known as Veilomani Dosti.

A key achievement of this partnership is the forthcoming construction of a 100-bed Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, which India has pledged to build. Mr. Mehta described this initiative as a testament to India’s dedication to enhancing healthcare resilience in Fiji and the surrounding Pacific region, indicating that the tender process is currently underway, with construction anticipated to commence shortly.

In addition to healthcare, Mr. Mehta detailed plans to expand collaboration in defense, agriculture, education, and capacity-building initiatives. He pointed out that India’s expertise in renewable energy, digital technologies, and climate resilience offers fresh avenues for cooperation both bilaterally and through regional forums.

“India remains committed to collaborating with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations to advocate for sustainable growth and shared prosperity,” he remarked, reinforcing India’s active engagement through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation. This partnership not only symbolizes the strengthening ties but also presents a hopeful future marked by mutual advancement and support.
