District Officers (DOs) on the remote island of Rotuma are set to experience improved living conditions following recent renovations to government quarters. Completed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, this upgrade is part of efforts to boost the standard of living and enhance service delivery for government officials stationed in one of Fiji’s most isolated communities.
The government has allocated approximately $0.5 million under the Coalition Government for the enhancement of staff accommodations not just in Rotuma but also in areas like Nadarivatu. This investment aims to better support DOs in their roles, which include coordinating disaster responses, delivering public services, and engaging in community development.
The Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Rotuma this week signifies official acknowledgment of these improvements, underscoring the importance of supporting DOs who play crucial roles in maintaining effective governance in outer island communities. A Ministry statement highlighted, “These officers play a vital role on the ground, and ensuring they are well supported is essential to maintaining an effective government presence.”
