Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Independent MP Alvick Maharaj to formalize his concerns with the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding challenges he faces in appealing the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This guidance follows Maharaj’s public criticism of the COC for its slow action in appointing a new Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, a position vacant since Barbara Malimali’s resignation last September.

During a discussion reported by FijiLive, Rabuka emphasized that Maharaj could address the situation through the COC, which includes two representatives from the Opposition, one being the Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu. The Prime Minister explained that there are two distinct issues at play: the appointment of the Electoral Commission Chairperson and the ongoing appeal, which is being handled by the Fijian Elections Office.

Maharaj has described the COC’s delay as ‘slack,’ asserting that the commission is fully aware of the established appeal process, yet has yet to appoint a new commissioner. The appeal stems from a complaint by former FijiFirst MP Mosese Bulitavu, who claimed constitutional violations within the party. As this political matter progresses, the next hearing related to Maharaj’s appeal is set for August 15.

This unfolding situation highlights the complexities of Fiji’s political landscape and underscores the need for efficient and transparent electoral processes. While challenges abound, the dialogue initiated by the Prime Minister is a step toward fostering collaboration among political entities, enhancing public trust in the electoral framework, and potentially leading to improved governance in Fiji.

It is vital for all involved parties to maintain clear communication and adherence to democratic principles, which may ultimately contribute to a fair resolution for the issues at hand.
