Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farm into a commercial operation after being awarded a grant of US$5,000 (approximately F$11,228.75) last week. The grant was presented to Ms. Ali by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program at the Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau.

Ms. Ali plans to utilize the grant to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials to upgrade the existing infrastructure. She expressed her goal of providing fresh, organic, and pesticide-free vegetables to consumers at lower prices compared to current market rates.

Her company, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), operates a small-scale hydroponics farm in Chinakoti, Ba. Ms. Ali launched the business in September 2022, motivated by the rising risks associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region.

She emphasized the importance of healthy eating habits for improved lifestyles. NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System along with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics system to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre of land. Ms. Ali noted the use of advanced technology, including an automated dosing system from Bluelab, to manage their operations.

The hydroponic system allows NFFS to provide a consistent supply of fresh, healthy vegetables year-round. Additionally, Ms. Ali’s company promotes inclusivity by employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Reflecting on her experiences as a traditional farmer, she noted the challenges posed by climate events like flooding and drought. However, the hydroponic system mitigates these issues, enabling the growth of various vegetables without concern for changing weather conditions.

The GIST program offers intensive business training aimed at empowering young innovators in science and technology through mentorship and practical training provided by experts from the United States, in collaboration with local partners.
