HOTEC 2024: Where Tourism Innovation Meets Celebration

As I reflect on the progress of the Hospitality, Tourism, and Equipment Conference (HOTEC), I am truly excited about our achievements thus far. When we initiated this tradeshow years ago, our goal was to create a platform for tourism suppliers to connect with hotel properties and hospitality professionals, all in one venue.

Given the challenges of staying current with industry trends, boosting productivity, cutting expenses, and introducing globally recognized products to a small island in the South Pacific, our vision was indeed ambitious. Now, looking ahead to 2024, I can proudly state that HOTEC has transformed into a remarkable event, with our locale becoming a globally recognized brand and a must-visit destination on many travelers’ bucket lists.

HOTEC is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of our industry, an opportunity to unite and exchange ideas that will influence the future of tourism in Fiji and the greater South Pacific region. We have broadened our exhibitor base, diversified the range of products and services on display, and crafted a comprehensive program filled with informative sessions and competitions aimed at highlighting local talent while addressing training and upskilling challenges.

Whether you are a hotel manager, hospitality professional, supplier, or someone passionate about tourism, make it a priority to attend HOTEC 2024 and witness firsthand the direction in which this competitive industry is heading. You won’t want to miss it!

The event will kick off on Day Zero, October 23, with the HOTEC Welcome Networking Cocktail, hosted by the ACT and NSW governments alongside Pacific Trade Invest Australia. This gathering is not only an opportunity to enjoy cocktails featuring Australia’s premier food and beverage products, but also a chance to connect with new suppliers and fellow hospitality enthusiasts.

Industry leaders, exhibitors, and guests will come together to build relationships, share insights, and explore innovative ideas that could enhance products and services.

On Day One, October 24, we will officially open the conference with our Chief Guest, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation. Following the opening, we will host the HOTEC Barista Competition Finals, a crowd favorite that showcases the exceptional skills of our local baristas. Their competitions highlight the dedication and artistry that goes into every cup of coffee, and I encourage everyone to come and support our talented baristas.

We will then hold Information Session 1: Thriving and Inclusive Communities, from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. This session will address the significance of maintaining compliant working conditions and promoting local employment opportunities—critical components of sustainable tourism. If you’re an emerging entrepreneur looking to break into the industry, join us to learn how successful ventures began.

Later in the day, from 2 PM to 3:30 PM, we will present Session 2: Prosperous Visitor Economy, sponsored by PTI Australia. This session will focus on understanding our taxation responsibilities and leveraging digital tools to enhance marketability. Attendees will gain insights into business obligations and learn how to use technology to strengthen their business presence. Examples will illustrate how local purchasing and sourcing have positively impacted businesses, inspiring many to rethink their strategies.

As Day One concludes, we will gather once more for the HOTEC Networking Cocktail, hosted by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. This event offers another chance to mingle, share experiences, and foster connections that may lead to future collaborations. Networking is essential in our field, often sparking the most exciting ideas and partnerships.

Day Two, Friday, October 25, will feature the finals of the HOTEC Chef and Cocktail competition, promising an exhilarating atmosphere as the best chefs and mixologists go head-to-head, showcasing their creativity and skill.

We will follow with Information Session 3: Healthy Islands and Oceans, sponsored by Palmex International, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. This session will cover resource management and the importance of protecting our environment for tourism businesses to prosper. Attendees are encouraged to bring their ideas or learn from those who are advancing sustainable practices.

Finally, from 2 PM to 3:30 PM, we will conclude with Information Session 4: Visible and Valued Cultures. This session will focus on responsibly managing visits to cultural sites and engaging with indigenous communities with respect and understanding.

To wrap up HOTEC 2024, we will host the HOTEC Gala Awards Night, organized by Austrade and Trade Investment Queensland. This event will not only honor excellence in our industry but also celebrate our collective achievements and reflect on our shared journey.

These highlights represent just a fraction of what to expect during the two days of HOTEC, with many more exciting activities to discover on the FHTA website. Participating in HOTEC 2024 is an invaluable opportunity to connect with industry leaders, exhibitors, and government representatives. Networking goes beyond exchanging business cards; it’s about forming partnerships that can elevate operations and inspire growth. We take pride in the wonderful connections made at these events, which have opened new business prospects.

To facilitate attendance at HOTEC 2024, transportation arrangements will be available for attendees and exhibitors, ensuring easy movement throughout the event, including those traveling from Nadi and as far as Suva. Shuttle services will also be provided for those with accommodations outside the venue.

Gather your teams to engage in meaningful discussions, learn from the best in the business, and depart with strategies to enhance your operations. We are committed to advancing this industry forward.
