The newly refurbished Empower Pacific Counselling Center at CWM Hospital in Suva has officially opened its doors, thanks to significant funding from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) charities. This upgrade is hailed as a crucial enhancement for mental health and social support services in Fiji.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Luke Nasedra emphasized that the renovations reflect a strong partnership dedicated to improving community wellbeing. The new center offers a more inviting and comfortable space for both clients and staff, fostering a welcoming environment for individuals seeking assistance.

Dr. Nasedra recognized Empower Pacific’s longstanding commitment to supporting Fijians for over 31 years. He stated, “Empower Pacific has now evolved into a comprehensive agency delivering a diverse array of individual and community support services, along with training programs that set high standards for therapeutic counselling, specialized HIV prevention initiatives, and other focused interventions aimed at promoting equality throughout the Pacific region.”

In his remarks, Dr. Nasedra acknowledged the vital work of the team involved in therapeutic counselling, managing cases of gender-based violence, child protection, mental health support, and psychosocial care during natural disasters. The dedicated team of 10 counselors and two social workers at CWM Hospital serves approximately 1,500 clients each year, while additional centers nationwide assist around 20,000 individuals annually.

Dr. Nasedra expressed gratitude towards LDS charities for their support in the renovation process, noting that this investment will not only boost staff morale but also enhance the quality of service delivery. He encouraged Empower Pacific to continue its involvement in future redevelopment projects at CWM Hospital.

The opening of the new Empower Pacific Counselling Center marks a hopeful step forward in expanding access to essential mental health services, reinforcing the importance of community partnerships in fostering wellbeing across Fiji. This renovation not only improves physical space but also symbolizes a commitment to uplifting mental health support in the Pacific region.
