Donald Trump recently announced that following a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia and Ukraine will begin negotiations for a ceasefire. However, the Kremlin has indicated that this process may take time, causing some skepticism. In his remarks, Trump stated that he conveyed the ceasefire plan to various European leaders and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, expressing optimism about potential progress in ending the conflict.
Trump’s assertion came after a crucial round of talks held in Turkey, which marked the first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine since March 2022. Although Putin welcomed the idea of resuming talks, he also noted that these efforts are still “generally on the right track,” failing to generate immediate expectations for breakthroughs. Trump emphasized the importance of cautious engagement rather than escalating tensions through new sanctions against Russia, stating, “I think there’s a chance of getting something done.”
European leaders, upon learning of Trump’s conversation with Putin, decided to push for new sanctions against Russia should the ceasefire negotiations falter.
