Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua is set to meet Minister for Finance Biman Prasad to discuss the budgetary allocation for the Fiji Police Force. Confirming this during his recent visit to Labasa, Naivalurua highlighted that discussions had already taken place between Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu and the Ministry of Finance.
Naivalurua stated, “I am now left to have a final consultation with Mr Prasad to discuss issues raised previously and some proving new ones also.” He underscored the necessity of funding to improve the reform and restructuring of the force, noting that certain areas are currently underfunded, which hampers the police’s ability to effectively address modern challenges.
The Minister stressed the importance of equipping and supporting the police, stating, “We cannot do that with the resources and situation we have, so we are really asking Government to equip and support the force.” His remarks reflect a larger commitment within the police leadership to pursue operational enhancements, recognizing that adequate resources are vital for fostering a well-equipped and organized police force capable of safeguarding the Fijian community.
This effort aligns with ongoing reforms highlighted in previous discussions, including an increased budget allocation and initiatives like the “Restore Blue” program, aiming to enhance police accountability and community trust. Amid rising concerns about crime rates and public safety, Naivalurua’s proactive engagement and collaborative approach signal a hopeful outlook for the future of policing in Fiji. The dialogue surrounding budgetary needs is indicative of a broader strategy committed to improving the efficacy, responsiveness, and public perception of the police.
Overall, such discussions reflect a concerted effort to bolster public safety and trust within the community, positioning the Fiji Police Force towards more effective service delivery.
