Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) coordinator Shamima Ali expressed optimism for significant changes within the Fiji Police Force following a meeting with Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu. Their discussions centered on troubling issues regarding the treatment of women during the reporting of domestic violence and sexual crimes.

In past communications, FWCC has been critical of the police’s inadequate response to domestic violence incidents, emphasizing the mistreatment of women and girls when they seek help. Ms. Ali highlighted that victims often face questioning that reverses their roles from survivors to perpetrators.

Among the concerns raised were the insufficient follow-up on breaches of Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs) and the lack of urgency in addressing violent crimes. Ali also pointed out the importance of proper training for officers to ensure they are aware of updated laws and practices. “Leadership within the police has shown a decline in customer service, along with a lack of knowledge regarding new legal frameworks,” Ms. Ali stated, pressing for a paradigmatic shift in police culture and practices.

Amidst these challenges, Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged the value of the FWCC’s input as an external auditor in reviewing police responses to violence against women and girls. He reinforced the necessity for continued collaboration between the organizations to implement best practices and enhance police training.

This meeting and the dialogue surrounding it reflect ongoing efforts to improve law enforcement’s approach to addressing gender-based violence, which remains a significant issue in Fiji. With a commitment to reform and collaboration, there is hope for a more supportive response system for survivors of domestic violence in the region, paving the way towards a safer environment for women and girls. These developments indicate a positive trajectory for community engagement in nurturing sensitive policing practices aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals.
