Excitement is building in Honiara, the capital city of the Solomon Islands, as it gears up to host the much-anticipated Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship. This event follows the successful 2023 Pacific Games and positions Honiara as a rising hub for sports, culture, and tourism in the Pacific region.

The championship will welcome over 500 participants, including athletes, officials, and media, alongside a significant influx of visitors to the Solomon Islands. Competing teams from various countries will vie for qualification to the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series, with two men’s teams and one women’s team securing spots to represent the region on an international stage.

Dagnal Dereveke, Chief Executive of Tourism Solomons, highlighted the importance of this championship in promoting the Solomon Islands to a global audience and enhancing the local tourism industry. He noted that the successful hosting of past major events has showcased the country’s capacity to manage such tournaments while enticing visitors to explore the breathtaking islands beyond the competition.

The tournament’s group stage matchups have been announced, with notable pairings including Fiji’s men’s development team in Pool A with Tuvalu and Nauru, and Australia’s development team facing off against Vanuatu, American Samoa, and Japan’s development team in Pool B. Meanwhile, the women’s division sees the Fiji development team pitted against the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu in Pool A.

This upcoming championship not only signifies a celebration of rugby but also embodies an opportunity for the Solomon Islands to shine on the sporting map, attracting both athletes and tourists alike.
