Anticipation is growing as Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, gears up to host the much-anticipated Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship. Following the successful Pacific Games held in 2023 and other regional events, Honiara is solidifying its reputation as a sports, cultural, and tourism hub in the Pacific region.

The upcoming championship is poised to attract over 500 participants, including athletes, officials, delegates, and media, along with a notable influx of visitors to the Solomon Islands. Teams from throughout the region will compete for a chance to qualify for the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, with two men’s teams and one women’s team securing spots to represent their nations on an international platform.

Dagnal Dereveke, Chief Executive of Tourism Solomons, emphasized the event’s importance in showcasing the Solomon Islands to a global audience and enhancing the tourism sector. He noted that the successful hosting of major events like the Pacific Games has proven the capacity of the Solomon Islands to manage such tournaments, enticing visitors to experience the islands beyond just the sporting contests.

The tournament’s pool draws have been finalized, with notable matchups set to occur. The Fiji men’s sevens development team has been placed in Pool A, competing against Tuvalu and Nauru. Other pools feature teams such as the Australian development team going head-to-head with Vanuatu, American Samoa, and Japan’s development team in Pool B; Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, and New Caledonia in Pool C; and Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Niue, and Tahiti in Pool D.

In the women’s division, the Fiji development team will compete alongside the host nation, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu in Pool A. Pool B comprises Samoa, American Samoa, and Vanuatu, while Pool C consists of Tonga, the Cook Islands, and Kiribati.
