Anticipation is growing as Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, prepares to host the highly awaited Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship. Following a successful run of the 2023 Pacific Games and other regional sports events, Honiara is positioning itself as a vibrant center for sports, culture, and tourism within the Pacific region.

The tournament is set to attract over 500 athletes, officials, delegates, and media, alongside a substantial number of tourists visiting the Solomon Islands. Teams from various territories will vie for qualification for the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, with two men’s teams and one women’s team securing the opportunity to compete on an international stage.

Dagnal Dereveke, Chief Executive of Tourism Solomons, underlined the importance of the event in showcasing the Solomon Islands to a global audience, emphasizing its role in enhancing the tourism sector. He highlighted that the successful hosting of major events like the Pacific Games has illustrated the Islands’ capability to manage such large-scale tournaments and draw visitors who wish to experience more than just the sporting action.

The tournament’s pool draws have been finalized, with the Fiji men’s sevens development team placed in Pool A alongside Tuvalu and Nauru. Pool B will see the Australian development team compete against Vanuatu, American Samoa, and the Japan development squad. Pool C comprises Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, and New Caledonia, while Pool D features Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Niue, and Tahiti.

In the women’s tournament, the Fiji development team is grouped with the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu in Pool A. Pool B includes Samoa, American Samoa, and Vanuatu, while Tonga, Cook Islands, and Kiribati are in Pool C.

As the event approaches, it not only promises thrilling sports action but also offers a unique chance for the Solomon Islands to shine on an international stage.
