The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya, has emphasized the significant role of family dynamics in the rising number of homeless children in Fiji’s urban areas. She pointed out that while the government is committed to providing solutions to diminish the homelessness crisis among children, the ultimate responsibility lies with parents and the circumstances within their homes.

Tabuya identified pressures stemming from family conflicts, substance abuse, and neglect as key factors pushing children to live on the streets. In response to this urgent issue, the government has established a Taskforce aimed at investigating the root causes driving children to abandon their homes.

She stated, “This Taskforce is essential for understanding why so many children find themselves living on the streets. Some of it is linked to home pressures, drug issues, abuse, and unfortunately, parental neglect.”

Despite efforts to rescue children from the streets and place them in rehabilitation centers, Tabuya acknowledged a shortage of trained professionals qualified to provide adequate care for these vulnerable youth. “While certain centers have been created, we face a scarcity of skilled workers who are experienced in child welfare and rehabilitation,” she explained.

In light of inquiries from Opposition Member Praveen Bala regarding the housing of street children, Tabuya assured that a Regulatory Order is in place to ensure that children are placed in supportive and safe environments, adequately distinguishing between those who require help and those posing a risk to others.

The increasing presence of street children highlights a pressing challenge for Fiji, underscoring the pressing need for comprehensive measures to address homelessness and social inequality, particularly among the younger population.

This situation calls for collective awareness and action, bringing together community support, governmental initiatives, and empowering families to create a nurturing environment for their children. With concerted efforts, there is hope for a brighter future for these youngsters, steering them away from the streets and towards a more stable and supportive upbringing.

Summary: Minister Lynda Tabuya has addressed the alarming increase of homeless children in Fiji, attributing the crisis to various family issues. The government has set up a Taskforce to investigate the causes and is working on improving rehabilitation services, although lacks enough trained professionals. There is an urgent call for more action to address the homelessness problem among children, with an emphasis on the importance of supportive home environments.
