Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized that while the government has taken measures to prevent children from migrating to urban areas and subsequently becoming homeless, the primary responsibility lies with parents and the home environment.

Tabuya identified familial pressures and issues as major contributors to the rising number of homeless children on the streets. She announced the establishment of a Taskforce specifically tasked with investigating the factors leading to this crisis.

“We have created a Taskforce to explore the reasons behind the increasing numbers of children living on the streets. Many are suffering due to family pressures, drug issues, abuse, and parental neglect,” she explained.

The minister pointed out that while some children have successfully transitioned from the streets to rehabilitation centers, there remains a critical shortage of trained professionals equipped to care for these vulnerable youth.

“Despite the establishment of several centers, the shortage of experienced and qualified professionals to care for these children is concerning,” she admitted.

Responding to inquiries from Opposition Member Praveen Bala regarding child placement, Tabuya mentioned the existence of a Regulatory Order that the government must follow to ensure children are appropriately housed. “This order is designed to ensure that children who are placed in homes are properly separated from those who may pose a risk or cause harm,” she noted.

This situation highlights an urgent need for decisive action as the increasing number of street-dwelling children has raised significant concerns in Fiji, underscoring the broader challenges related to homelessness and social inequality in the country.

It is encouraging to see the government actively addressing these issues with a dedicated Taskforce, which may pave the way for innovative solutions. Addressing homelessness among children is not just a matter of policy but a societal concern that requires collective effort and commitment from all stakeholders. By raising awareness and promoting collaboration between government, communities, and families, there is hope for creating a supportive environment for these vulnerable children, potentially leading to more sustainable solutions for their well-being.
