For the first time in Fiji’s swimming history, three homeschooled siblings will represent their country together at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, marking a significant milestone for the family and the nation. The Kwong siblings – 16-year-old Theola, her younger brother Thaddeus, and their older sister Charis – will compete under the national flag, bringing a unique family spirit to the international event.

Theola, a keen swimmer with seven years of experience, recently excelled at the Fiji Primary and Secondary Schools National Swimming Championship, winning three gold medals and one silver across several events, including her main focus, the backstroke. This championship served as an important stepping stone in her preparations for the Mini Games, where she also aims to improve her skills in backstroke racing.

Supported by their mother’s encouragement, the siblings have trained rigorously at the Dolphin swimming club, where head coach Paula Cokanasiga emphasizes fine-tuning race strategies. They maintain a demanding training schedule, with morning and afternoon sessions, and incorporate gym workouts to build strength.

In addition to their swimming endeavors, both Theola and Thaddeus will join Charis in the triathlon relay and compete in the aquathlon during the Mini Games, presenting an exciting and demanding challenge for the whole family. The upcoming event represents not only their athletic debut on an international stage but also highlights the resilience of Fiji’s sporting community, showcasing dedication, hard work, and family support.

As they prepare for this momentous occasion, their journey reflects a larger trend of young athletes in Fiji aiming for excellence while balancing sports and academics. With a hopeful attitude, Theola expressed gratitude towards her coach and parents for their support, affirming their determination to excel and make Fiji proud.

The 2025 Pacific Mini Games is set to kick off on June 29, where the Kwong siblings are eager to leave their mark and demonstrate the unity and spirit that sports can foster within the Fijian community.
