Cathy Wong has been elected as the new President of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), a significant milestone in her career, succeeding Makarita Lenoa who held the position for the past seven years. Wong secured the majority of votes in the first round of elections held during FASANOC’s Annual General Assembly.
In addition to Wong’s election, Ajay Ballu was elected Vice President following seven rounds of voting. Ballu previously served as Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission during the 2023 Pacific Games. Alongside them, former national baseball player Inoke Niubalavu and Fiji Swimming President Lucy Erasito joined the board as Vice Presidents.
In her acceptance remarks, Wong expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and emphasized her intent to strengthen ties with national sports federations. She aims to promote greater collaboration, which she believes will enhance Fiji’s performance in sports. Outgoing President Makarita Lenoa thanked the stakeholders for their support throughout her term and conveyed best wishes to the incoming leadership team.
This leadership change bodes well for Fiji sports as it acknowledges and empowers women in leadership roles, reflecting a commitment to enhance national sports federations. Wong’s prior experience as a Board Director for Women’s Rugby at the Fiji Rugby Union provides her with a solid foundation to lead FASANOC towards a brighter future.
As Fiji looks ahead, the synergy between the newly elected leaders could pave the way for substantial advancements in the country’s sporting initiatives, promising a promising pathway for future athletes and bolstering Fiji’s presence on the international sports stage.
