In a historic and exhilarating match, Ratu Latianara College’s U16 girls’ rugby team triumphed in the 2025 Weet-Bix Raluve U16 championship, celebrated as a monumental victory not just for the school but for the entire Serua Province. The 12-10 victory over defending champions Sigatoka Methodist College was a testament to the team’s resilience, determination, and community support.

Ratu Latianara College, drawing students from 12 villages and two districts, marked the first victory from any school in the Southern Zone to claim the Raluve Trophy. The significance of this win extends beyond the sport itself, becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration for young girls in the region, proving that with grit and belief, success is achievable regardless of the obstacles.

The intense final match at the HFC National Stadium in Suva unfolded with high drama. As time was running out, Nanise Donumaitoga scored a decisive try, securing the win amidst cheers and tears from the supporters. Captain Jennifer Vakataleqica expressed immense gratitude to the school and community, underscoring the support from their parents who stood by them throughout their journey.

Coach Ratu Kuriyalavou spoke about the challenges faced due to limited resources and lack of equipment, highlighting their no-frills training on sand dunes and lifting logs. This humble and hard-earned approach served as the backbone of their stunning victory. The community and the namesake chieftain’s support injected additional motivation for the team.

This victory symbolizes more than athletic achievement; it’s an affirmation of the power of community, belief, and grassroots determination. Former Fiji rep Etuate Honda highlighted the victory as a product of deep respect among team members and commitment to teamwork and discipline inspired by Fijian rugby legend Gusuivalu, affectionately known as “Honda.”

The joy and celebrations did not stop at the stadium. The entire province of Serua celebrated the unexpected victory, witnessing history through various platforms including Walesi. With four players from the team now selected for the Fiji school girls’ rugby squad, the win also promises further opportunities for these players to shine on a larger stage.

Ratu Latianara’s triumph further reinforces the burgeoning growth of women’s rugby in Fiji, inspiring more schools to invest in and elevate their rugby programs. More than mere sport, this victory stands as a testament to the spirit of perseverance, illustrating how with community backing, the young athletes can overcome any odds to achieve greatness.
