Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), along with Chief Financial Officer Vimlesh Sagar, has entered a not guilty plea regarding charges of abuse of office. The two appeared in the Magistrates Court in Suva, agreeing to have their trial conducted in the lower court.

Sayed-Khaiyum faces two counts, including one for abuse of office and another for general dishonesty causing a financial loss, while Sagar is charged with one count of general dishonesty causing a loss. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) revealed to the court that it intends to call upon 25 witnesses, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for April 11 to resolve preliminary issues.

Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola expressed his desire to settle the case within a year of filing, although this may be complicated due to the unavailability of legal representation. Consequently, the trial has been set for September 2-17, 2025.

The allegations suggest that Sayed-Khaiyum initiated multiple legal actions without the FBC Board’s approval, which are thought to have caused a loss of $138,813 between July 2017 and January 2023. Additionally, it is claimed he pursued cases detrimental to the FBC for personal gain during that time frame. Sagar allegedly approved payments to R Patel Lawyers totaling $15,075, cognizant that it would lead to a loss.

In a separate charge, Sayed-Khaiyum is accused of abusing his office by circumventing the tender process to secure a vehicle for $207,470 between September and November 2022, actions purportedly harmful to FBC’s interests. Sagar is also accused of enabling this vehicle purchase, aware that it would financially disadvantage the corporation.

While the situation is serious and the legal outcomes are pending, the dedication of the court to resolve these matters efficiently is commendable. This case underscores the importance of accountability and integrity within public service institutions and can serve as a reminder of the need for transparency in financial dealings. The legal proceedings may also provide an opportunity for the FBC to strengthen its governance processes moving forward.

Summary: Former FBC CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and CFO Vimlesh Sagar pleaded not guilty to abuse of office charges and general dishonesty. They will face trial in September 2025, with significant allegations against them regarding legal proceedings and financial transactions. The case highlights the importance of accountability in public institutions.
