The High Court is expected to issue a preliminary ruling concerning serious allegations against former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem. The case revolves around claims of potential constitutional breaches related to Saneem’s rights.
Sayed-Khaiyum is facing a charge of abuse of office, while Saneem is charged with receiving a corrupt benefit. It is alleged that during his tenure as Acting Prime Minister from June 30 to July 12, 2022, Sayed-Khaiyum signed a Deed of Variation and Addendum without obtaining proper authorization from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President to allow government payments for Saneem’s taxes.
Further claims suggest that between June 1 and July 31, 2022, Saneem unlawfully solicited and received over $50,000 in tax relief on his back pay from a senior government official, which raises questions regarding legal authority for such actions.
The next court hearing is scheduled for April 15, and a tentative trial date has been set for May 26 to 30. This legal case underscores significant ethical and legal challenges within the government sector, highlighting the critical need for transparency and accountability in public office.
As the proceedings advance, there is optimism for a resolution that reinforces justice and ethical conduct among public officials. The community remains hopeful that the outcomes of this case will contribute to restoring trust in governance and ensure that public officials are held to high standards of integrity.
