Two of the nine individuals being prosecuted in a significant drug trafficking case involving 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine were cross-examined in court yesterday. Sakiusa Tuva and Cathy Tuirabe, both of whom had previously pleaded guilty, provided testimony before High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge.
During the proceedings, Tuirabe described receiving a call from Tuva in December 2023 about the drug shipment being in Nadi, prompting her arrival in January 2024 to assist in the operation. She admitted to staying at Tuva’s home frequently to “guard its contents” and wrapping packages of methamphetamine before transferring them to the Transit Hotel. Under questioning, she acknowledged that she was paid approximately $300 for her involvement and recounted fleeing the scene when police raided the property.
On the stand, Tuva faced scrutiny from Deputy DPP John Rabuku, who suggested that his guilty plea was solely for mitigating his potential sentence. Tuva maintained that he accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed faith in receiving mercy. He detailed a series of interactions involving drug logistics, including being guided by an encrypted messaging app and using a Toyota HiAce van allegedly purchased by co-accused Jale Aukerea to move the drugs.
The trial has garnered attention due to the extensive evidence and witness accounts, including three immunity witnesses, which may help the prosecution substantiate its case against the accused. Notably, a new witness has emerged regarding another defendant, Justin Ho, who claims to have acted under duress—a development that raises important legal considerations as the trial proceeds.
As the trial unfolds, it underscores Fiji’s commitment to combating drug trafficking. This case not only reflects ongoing legal efforts to hold offenders accountable but also serves to strengthen community safety and trust in the judicial system. The proceedings keep hope alive for effective justice and the potential for deterrence against future drug-related crimes.
