A member of the Counter Narcotics Bureau, Apenisa Matadigo, faced charges in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court related to the seizure of 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine. Alongside him, two accomplices, Viliame Nalago and Are Tania, were also charged with unlawful possession of illicit drugs.
Matadigo, who has been suspended from his duties, is additionally facing a charge for possession of $470 in cash, believed to be proceeds of crime. His attorney, Alitia Mario, petitioned for bail, arguing that Matadigo’s safety was at risk if he were remanded, especially given his previous role in the Intelligence Unit of the police force. She further requested a closed court session to protect sensitive information.
However, the police prosecutor, Inspector Parmesh Chand, opposed the bail request, citing public safety concerns and the seriousness of the drug-related charges. Ultimately, Magistrate Semi Babitu denied bail for all three defendants, stating that remand was necessary for community safety, given the escalating issue of drugs in Nadi.
The case has been postponed to the High Court in Lautoka for mention on June 2, indicating a judicial system keen on addressing drug offenses rigorously.
This recent development comes amidst a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in Fiji, where there have been several significant seizures. For instance, authorities recently confiscated large quantities of methamphetamine in similar operations. These actions underscore a firm commitment by law enforcement to tackle the growing drug issue in the region, highlighting the importance of community safety and the justice system’s role in preserving it.
The current situation presents a hopeful outlook as continued legal action against drug-related crimes may lead to a safer environment for the public, reinforcing the collaborative efforts of various agencies involved in these operations.
