Sanjay Kaba, Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited and former Director of Telecom Fiji Limited, has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges regarding alleged financial misconduct. The accusations suggest that Kaba improperly acquired more than $766,000 through his company for project management services related to Telecom Fiji’s new office and data center project. This alleged misconduct reportedly took place during his board membership from January 27, 2017, to January 20, 2019, during which he allegedly failed to disclose his interests when submitting bids for the tender.

During a recent court session, the Suva Magistrates Court granted Kaba a variation to his bail conditions, allowing him to travel abroad from March 1 to 18 for work purposes. He, alongside his two sureties, was required to put up a cash bail bond of $25,000 each. Additionally, Kaba’s mother is required to surrender her passport to the court. The next court hearing for this case is scheduled for March 19.

This case highlights ongoing challenges related to accountability and transparency in governance, particularly within Fiji’s public and corporate sectors. As authorities focus on combating corruption, this development serves as a reminder of the crucial need for ethical behavior in leadership roles. The proceedings may contribute to reinforcing integrity standards within governance and business practices, fostering a more transparent environment moving forward.
