The Suva Magistrate’s Court has scheduled a trial for former Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Salote Panapasa. During her appearance before Magistrate Krishan Prasad, Panapasa faced two charges of abuse of office, as well as an alternative accusation of general dishonesty resulting in a loss.

The allegations suggest that between August 1 and September 30, 2023, while serving as a civil servant in Suva, Panapasa directed officers to use building materials from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) for her private residence in Kinoya. Additionally, it is claimed that from August 1 to October 31, 2023, she instructed a Corrections officer to modify weekly reports to support the appropriated use of these materials at her home.

The court was prepared to consider the agreed facts regarding the case; however, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana noted that Panapasa’s attorney indicated that only two facts had been acknowledged—the name of Panapasa and her position. The remaining facts presented by FICAC were disputed by the defense. Both parties have agreed to proceed with the trial scheduled for June 23 to 27 of next year, during which her bail has been extended.

This case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in public service, suggesting a movement towards greater integrity and lawfulness in governmental operations. As the trial approaches, it will be crucial for the legal proceedings to unfold fairly, allowing the justice system to clarify these serious allegations against Panapasa. The public can remain hopeful that this situation encourages a more disciplined and responsible approach to public office responsibilities in Fiji.
