Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum will have to wait until Monday for the High Court in Suva to hear his application for a variation of bail. His attorney, Gul Fatima, informed the media that the High Court Criminal Registry has rescheduled the hearing, which was originally set for today.

Fatima conveyed that she had submitted a medical report on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for urgent attention due to a team of doctors recommending immediate cardiac and neurological assessments for Sayed-Khaiyum, which are not available in Fiji. She expressed concerns over potential health risks of a severe nature, having previously noted his history of stroke and heart disease, worries heightened by the doctors’ recommendations.

The reason for the postponement was attributed to the Chief Justice’s travels, according to Fatima. Additionally, she raised issues surrounding visits by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to Lautoka Aspen Medical Hospital, where Sayed-Khaiyum is currently receiving treatment. These visits have invoked concerns regarding her client’s constitutional rights.

The defense team remains watchful of Sayed-Khaiyum’s health and legal rights, as his medical complications continue to play a significant role in the ongoing legal proceedings, where he faces serious charges, including abuse of office.

The High Court’s compassion in allowing additional time for Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical evaluation illustrates a commitment to both health and justice, providing a glimmer of hope that thorough health assessment may lead to a more effective response to the legal challenges ahead. There is a collective hope among his family and legal team for a swift recovery, which will allow him to confront the issues he faces in court.
