The Fiji Public Trustee Corporation Limited is currently overseeing 5,000 wills and managing over 1,300 estates, highlighting the urgent need for greater public awareness regarding the location and existence of these wills. Chief Executive Ajay Singh emphasized that many families are often unaware of the existence of a will filed with the Public Trustee, which can lead to delays and confusion in the administration process during a difficult time.
Singh pointed out the corporation’s diligent efforts in monitoring daily death notices to identify clients who have passed away and to notify their next of kin whenever possible. He stated, “If the members don’t know if there is a will, then they go to the courts, and our wills are registered. So, they will eventually find out that there is a will with a public trustee, and they will be sent back to us.”
Further elucidating the issue, Manager Legal Shristi Kumar explained the implications of dying without a will, noting that there are two methods for appointing a trustee: either the Fiji Public Trustee can be designated or an individual can choose someone they trust to take on this responsibility.
In light of these challenges, the Fiji Public Trustee Corporation Limited is encouraging the public to communicate with family members about whether they have prepared a will and to make crucial details easily accessible. By doing so, families can avoid unnecessary complications during what is often an emotionally taxing period. This proactive approach aims to streamline estate administration and provide clarity for grieving families, ensuring that their loved ones’ wishes are honored and fulfilled.
