In the tranquil village of Wailotua, located in the Wainibuka region of Tailevu, the cultural expression of Tuki Masi, or Fijian Tapa, resonates deeply as artisan Biusalia Bosenawainibuka proudly showcases her craftsmanship. Recently featured at the Central Division Women’s Expo in Suva, Bosenawainibuka, originally from Namuka-i-Lau, has become a respected figure in her community for the intricate beauty and cultural significance of her masi pieces.

“Tapa making is not just a job; it is part of who I am. It connects me to my people, to our history,” she shared, emphasizing the integral role this craft plays in her identity. The process of creating masi commences with preparing the bark of the mulberry tree, which is then pounded until soft, dried, and artistically decorated. Her creations range beyond traditional motifs to include personal designs inspired by her clientele, both local and international.

Her passion for masi-making goes hand in hand with her daily life—family members assist her in gathering materials, and neighbors frequently seek her advice on patterns. “This is how we live. And how we survive,” she noted, reflecting the community-oriented approach that strengthens both familial ties and cultural heritage.

At the recent expo, Bosenawainibuka’s masi attracted admired attention, but for her, the pride stems not only from sales but from continuing a tradition that has been passed through generations. This narrative of preservation echoes the sentiments expressed by fellow artisans like Anisi Tupou from Lautoka, who also champions the craft of tapa making as a means of empowering herself and her family while preserving cultural heritage.

By showcasing the beauty and significance of their crafts at events like the expo, artisans like Bosenawainibuka continue to inspire hope, illustrating how traditional skills can merge with modern economic opportunities to uplift communities. Their dedication to preserving and celebrating their cultural identity offers a promising and vibrant future for Fijian art forms.
