Weather Update

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 10:45 AM on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Attention, residents of Fiji: Grab your umbrellas, don your raincoats, and maybe even consider building an ark. A HEAVY RAIN ALERT is in effect for the interior and the eastern parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Kadavu, and our beloved mini islands, including Lau and the Lomaiviti group. You might want to check your gutters and be sure they’re ready for a waterfall!

Additionally, there’s a FLASH FLOOD ALERT out there, targeting small streams and those trouble-prone low-lying areas that just can’t seem to stay dry. This includes spots from Korolevu through the Coral Coast and other places like Navua, Lami, and even up to Korovou and Rakiraki. If you recognize your backyard in that list, it may be time to start another pool party—just be careful with the floating bar!

Here’s the scoop: A sluggish trough of low pressure is camped just north of Fiji, bringing along clouds and copious amounts of rain. Its movement is slower than a snail on a vacation, drifting south over the northern regions today before deciding it prefers the north again tomorrow. In the meantime, we’re feeling quite moist thanks to a southeast to southwest wind flow.

Forecast until midnight tomorrow brings you the delightful harmony of occasional heavy rain with some thunderous ‘booms’ over the Northern Division, Yasawa, Lau, Lomaiviti group, and the interior and eastern half of Viti Levu if you happen to be around Sigatoka, Suva, and beyond. Rain will play hard to get, but don’t worry; it’ll eventually ease to more gentle showers.

However, expect fine weather in other regions, with a likelihood of pesky afternoon or evening showers and occasional thunderstorms that might pack a punch. And watch out for those localized heavy falls that could lead to some neighborhoods getting a little too cozy with flash floods.

Here’s the fun-in-the-rain forecast for specific spots:

**Navua / Suva / Nausori**: Heavy rain and thunderstorms will keep you company, before rain decides to tone it down to mere showers tomorrow.

**Nadi / Lautoka / Ba**: Mostly sunny, with only a sprinkle of the wet stuff in the form of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. So save the rain dance for later!

**Sigatoka/Coral Coast**: Expect the rhythmic sound of heavy rain for now, with a gentle tune of showers starting tomorrow.

**Tavua/ Rakiraki**: Dry for now, but don’t get too comfortable—afternoon showers will crash the dry party.

**Yasawa/Mamanuca group**: Rain is in the forecast, but it’ll ease into friendly showers tomorrow. Afternoon fun might include more rain and thunderstorms.

**Labasa and Savusavu**: Heavy rain, thunder, and showers—welcome to your very own rain show!

**Lau/ Lomaiviti & Kadavu**: Similar to the above, heavy rain and thunder will make their appearances, too.

**Rotuma**: Pay attention! A STRONG WIND WARNING is in effect—prepare for windy days ahead, along with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

In summary, the elements are throwing a bit of a wet party across Fiji, so stay safe and dry, and keep those fun umbrellas handy! Cheers to a rainy day!
