Over 600 primary school students and 72 kindergarteners at Gandhi Bhawan Primary School participated in an engaging gymnastics session yesterday, led by Japanese sports science professor Araki Tatsuo. This initiative, organized by the Fiji Gymnastics Federation, introduced participants to “The Taiso,” a program dedicated to promoting movement, fitness, and enjoyment.

Professor Araki, an esteemed expert affiliated with Nippon Sports Science University in Tokyo and also the president of the Asian Gymnastics Union, brings over 20 years of experience in gymnastics development. He has previously served on the board and as vice president of the Japan Gymnastics Association. His visit to Fiji aims to advocate for health and fitness through accessible and enjoyable exercises.

“My aim is to share a simple exercise program that both children and adults can enjoy,” Araki stated, emphasizing the importance of making physical activity fun and engaging. The Taiso program, which translates to gymnastics in Japanese, is designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities. By combining elements of fun, fitness, and friendship, The Taiso encourages students to remain active, which in turn enhances their focus and performance in the classroom.

Nilesh Sharma, the head teacher of Gandhi Bhawan Primary School, expressed his gratitude for the initiative, pointing out the collaboration with the Fiji Gymnastics Federation that began last year. “This program helps children stay active in the classroom, which in turn improves their concentration on studies,” Sharma noted.

Looking ahead, Araki envisions expanding The Taiso program to more schools across Fiji, highlighting its potential to positively impact students’ overall well-being and academic success. This initiative is a promising step in fostering a healthier, more active generation.

This event not only emphasizes the importance of physical activity in the education system but also paves the way for future collaborations that reinforce health and fitness among children.
