Fifteen individuals tragically lost their lives, and 19 others sustained injuries when a bus veered off course and fell into a ravine in Solola, Guatemala, on Saturday, December 27. According to officials, the bus, which was traveling from Guatemala City to San Marcos via the Inter-American Highway, lost control at approximately midnight.

Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, with dozens of rescuers and around 20 ambulances rushing to the scene in the early hours. A two-and-a-half-hour operation was conducted to retrieve victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

Leandro Amado, a spokesperson for volunteer firefighters, reported that the deceased included 11 men, three women, and one minor. Fatal bus accidents on Guatemala’s mountainous highways are unfortunately common, as the steep terrain and difficult road conditions often contribute to such incidents.

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by those navigating Guatemala’s treacherous roads, highlighting the importance of road safety measures and infrastructure improvements in the region.
