A secondary school in the province of Ra has partnered with the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) to utilize underused land, aiming to boost food security for both the school and inmates. The official collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), allows for the planting of crops on the land surrounding Nakauvadra High School.

The initiative will cater to the nutritional needs of inmates who are involved in sugarcane harvesting in Rakiraki, as well as the school’s boarders. The FCS highlighted that dedicating a portion of the school’s idle land to farming will enhance food security for everyone involved. The MOU was the result of positive talks that highlighted mutual benefits, which include landscaping the school’s grounds and providing fresh produce.

The principal of Nakauvadra High School expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by the FCS, underscoring the partnership’s potential to make a significant, positive impact. Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, praised the school for their willingness to engage in this initiative, noting that it marks a significant step in FCS’s broader goals for community development and involvement in Rakiraki.

Moreover, ongoing discussions are in place regarding the establishment of a permanent rehabilitation center in the area. This center aims to provide low-security inmates with income-generating opportunities through participation in the sugarcane harvesting program. This project is poised not only to assist inmates in their rehabilitation but also to support local farmers, thereby contributing to the revitalization of Fiji’s sugar industry.

Dr. Nakarawa reaffirmed FCS’s commitment to fostering collaborations that will strengthen community ties and enhance rehabilitation efforts, emphasizing that initiatives like this are vital for building a safer and more sustainable community.

This collaboration between Nakauvadra High School and the FCS is not just a practical solution for land use; it symbolizes a community-focused approach to rehabilitation and food security, embodying hope for a brighter future for all stakeholders involved.
