Great Han Development: A Stop Work Order Dilemma

A ‘Stop Work Order’ is still in effect for the Great Han Residential Development located on Princess Road, as confirmed by the Department of Environment. On September 5, 2024, the department was informed by the Suva City Council that the order had been lifted.

In response to this notification, the Department of Environment conducted investigations and engaged with relevant parties to assess whether the lifting of the stop work order aligned with the department’s stance. It was determined that Great Han had not adhered to the Suva City Council’s decision, which stipulated that the project could only proceed if the requirements of the Department of Environment were fulfilled, as outlined in the decline decision.

As a result, the department followed due processes and reissued a stop work order on September 24, in accordance with Section 43 of the Environment Management Act 2005.
