The 2025 Fiji Sports Council Grassroots Fiji Under-21 7s tournament kicked off successfully last week at Ratu Ganilau Park in Savusavu. Over two days, 22 teams showcased their rugby prowess, bringing excitement and high energy to the event. As noted by Fiji Sports Council communications officer Emosi Lasaqa, most participating teams came from Vanua Levu and Taveuni, underscoring the region’s rich rugby talent.
In a fiercely contested final match, the Axellerate Dominion Brothers emerged victorious, narrowly defeating the Village Boys 12-7. Both teams displayed impressive skills and strategic play, with the outcome reflecting strong defensive efforts from both sides.
This year’s tournament also introduced an open-grade volleyball category, adding a new dimension to the competition. Labasa’s Blackrock team triumphed in this new segment, drawing in a diverse crowd and enhancing the weekend’s excitement.
Emosi Lasaqa emphasized the ongoing commitment to scouting talent throughout Fiji, especially in remote communities such as Yasawa, Moala, and Kadavu. This initiative aligns with the Fiji Sports Council’s goal of cultivating grassroots sports and identifying future stars in both rugby and volleyball.
As the tournament series progresses, the Fiji Sports Council invites interested teams to register for the upcoming Ovalau leg at Nasau Park, scheduled for next Friday and Saturday. This event represents a significant opportunity for young athletes to develop within a competitive framework, potentially setting the stage for the next generation of Fiji’s sporting leaders.
The support and enthusiasm surrounding these tournaments not only celebrate athletic talent but also foster community spirit, highlighting the importance of sport in uniting and uplifting local populations.
