The Fiji Agromarketing Grassroots 7s commenced today at the Bula Central College ground, marking a pivotal moment in the effort to bring rugby into the heart of rural and remote communities across the nation.

Upon arriving in Bua yesterday, tournament organizers faced challenges as several local teams were unable to register online due to connectivity issues inherent in their locations. Consequently, the draws were redone to ensure every team could participate, exemplifying the inclusive ethos that is fundamental to the Grassroots Fiji 7s Series.

This leg of the tournament has seen robust local involvement, with approximately 95 percent of participating teams hailing from Bua Province. Teams also came from Taveuni and the Natewa–Tunuloa area, while only four teams from Suva made the trip, emphasizing the community-driven nature of the event.

Gilbert Vakalalabure, Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Sports Council, expressed that this situation perfectly embodies the core mission of the Grassroots Fiji 7s Series. “This is exactly what the grassroots series is about—bringing 7s rugby to the doorsteps of our people,” he commented. He noted the importance of ensuring that rugby remains accessible to everyone, regardless of their geographic circumstances.

Vakalalabure also expressed gratitude to Fiji Agromarketing for its support as the naming sponsor of the Bua leg, recognizing that collaborations like this are crucial for the ongoing development of grassroots sports in the country.

Following the Bua tournament, the focus will shift to the Vatulele Grassroots Fiji 7s, set to take place on February 20 and 21 at Lawaqa Park, as the series continues its important work in unearthing talent and bolstering community rugby throughout Fiji.
