Between 2006 and 2023, a total of 3,442 accidents involving government vehicles were reported. This statistic was highlighted in three review reports presented by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence during a parliamentary session this week. The information stems from annual reports issued by the Office of the Attorney-General across the same timeline.
The reports indicate that the litigation and advocacy division of the Attorney-General’s office defended the State in court proceedings across all levels of the judicial system. The highest numbers of cases were linked to government vehicle accidents and general miscellaneous actions.
To enhance road safety, the committee recommended the implementation of ongoing and rigorous measures aimed at minimizing government vehicle accidents across all ministries and agencies.
The committee also expressed concern over the insufficient data regarding liquor licenses issued within the same reporting period, despite the existence of the Central Liquor Board established under the Liquor Act of 2006, which is responsible for advising the Minister on policy matters related to liquor licensing. The committee noted the absence of statistics on the number of approved liquor licenses during the period and urged that such information be included in future reports.
Furthermore, it was mentioned that the Mercy Commission has not convened for several years due to the lack of appointed committee members. The Office of the Attorney-General was also encouraged to continuously update and revise Fiji’s laws to align with the evolving needs of Fijian society.
In summary, these reports shed light on significant issues related to road safety and governance in Fiji, highlighting the need for improved data collection and responsive legal frameworks. The recommendations put forth by the committee may lead to better management of government resources and enhance public safety.
This report, while detailing past concerns, opens the door for future improvements and a commitment to safer practices, showing a proactive stance that could positively impact the community in Fiji. It underscores the importance of accountability and continuous improvement in public administration.
