The government has announced the implementation of a 5% increase in social protection allowances, as outlined in the national budget for 2025-2026. This change takes effect from August 1, 2025, and aims to provide much-needed financial assistance to various vulnerable groups across the country, including the elderly, low-income families, individuals with disabilities, students, and rural pregnant mothers.
The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection confirmed the revised allowance rates through a public notice detailing increases across multiple core social schemes. For instance, under the updated Social Pension Scheme, citizens aged 65-69 will receive $121 monthly, while those over 70 will receive $157. The Family Assistance Scheme will provide food vouchers along with new funding levels for households based on the number of members, ranging from $203 for families of four to $92 for single-member households.
Additionally, the Care & Protection Allowance offers educational support for children and includes a $50 food voucher. Students from pre-school to residential homes will see increased amounts, with special needs students receiving $133 per month.
Individuals with disabilities are set to receive $135, which incorporates a $26 transport assistance allocation. Furthermore, additional support measures include a $53 food allowance for rural pregnant mothers and a transport assistance scheme with a $26 monthly subsidy.
This increase follows last year’s 15% rise in allowances, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to alleviating financial pressures for citizens struggling with rising living costs. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized that these financial measures illustrate the government’s responsiveness to public needs during challenging economic times.
